The way Willoughby carries Marianne home after she injures her ankle resembles any other damsel in distress romance story. (Both would later become important literary movements in the nineteenth century.) Always too impulsive, Marianne goes with Willoughby to look over Mrs. Smith's house, accepts his offer of a horse, and pokes fun at Colonel Brandon to please him. Her attempt to claim intimacy with Willoughby at the party dramatizes the dangers of showing one's feelings publicly and contrasts strikingly with Elinor's more cautious restraint.
