Upon completion of degree requirements in any of VCU’s educator preparation programs and with the recommendation of the School of Education, students are eligible to receive initial and advanced licensure from the Virginia Department of Education. To receive Virginia’s secondary mathematics endorsement, this track must be completed in conjunction with the Master of Teaching degree offered through VCU’s School of Education as part of the Extended Teacher Preparation Program.

Yet, our support does not stop there. Each state receiving Title II funding is required to report annually on the quality of teacher preparation in the state, including the pass rates by teacher preparation programs.

A student enrolled in the extended teacher preparation program must complete a minimum of 153/154 credits. All MAE + Licensure students must apply through the Department of Art Education and be accepted for departmental admission to the Art Education Teacher Preparation Program. RTR is a highly selective graduate teacher residency program that recruits, trains, and supports teachers for high-needs and hard-to-staff schools.

Through the School of Education's Extended Teacher Preparation Program, students interested in teaching early childhood/elementary, middle, secondary or special education will complete studies combining the liberal arts and sciences with professional studies in an integrated sequence, typically over a five-year period. Transfer students and students currently attending VCU who wish to change their majors to this program must have a minimum GPA of 2.5; however, note the much higher GPA requirement for admission to teacher preparation and then to student teaching outlined below. In response to this new legislation, VCU Art Education is looking forward to developing more holistic admissions criteria.
